How to repay debt from New Zealand

If you owe us money, we want to help you repay it in a way that best suits your situation. We have a range of New Zealand repayment options available if you're not getting a Student Allowance from us.

If you:

  • are getting a Student Allowance from us, there's a different process for your debt repayments.
  • want to make repayments from overseas, there are different repayment options available.

How to repay debt from overseas

Repayment options

Below are the different repayment arrangements you can use if you're making repayments from New Zealand. These are for people who are not getting a Student Allowance from us.

We don't offer direct debit services.

If you need help setting up a payment arrangement, contact our Client Support Debt Management team

Step 1 - Set up a regular or one-off payment

You can make a one-off payment or set up regular payments using internet or telephone banking. Your bank may charge you for these services.

Account number

To set up the payments you'll need the account number: 03-0049-0006243-025. If your bank only needs a 2 digit suffix, use 25 instead of 025.

Once you enter the account number, your bank may match it to the account name it uses for us. If your bank doesn't match it, you can use the account name 'Work and Income Debt Management'.

Reference

In the reference field, you need to put the letter 'D' followed by your 9 digit client number.

Step 2 - Contact our debt management team

You also need to contact our Client Support Debt Management team

You need to let them know:

  • how much you'll be paying
  • how often the payments will be made (weekly, fortnightly or monthly)
  • when the payments will start.

You can pay online using your debit card.

You will need:

  • your name and client number
  • your debit card details:
    • name of the person on the card
    • card number
    • expiry date
    • card verification number, and
  • the amount you'd like to pay.

You can get debt repayments deducted from your wages.

If you want to do this, contact our Client Support Debt Management team

They will contact your employer to arrange repayments.

Step 1 - Set up automatic payment

You can set up automatic payments at your bank. These are payments you can control, edit and change yourself. Your bank may charge you for this service.

To set up the payments, you need to download and print the 'Authority Form for Debt Repayments' form.

Complete these details on the form:

  • fill in your bank and account details
  • choose how often the payments will be made (weekly, fortnightly or monthly)
  • enter the date the payments will start
  • write your client number after the 'D' in the 'Payee details' section, and
  • sign the form.

Then take the form to your bank. They will set it up for you.
